Great Tradition
Established
in 1972, Gateway Hockey has a proud tradition of promoting athletic
and academic excellence. The
club provides Gateway School District students in grades 6 thru
12 with the opportunity to play ice hockey at the AAA level
of competition, and has enjoyed tremendous success building
the character, skills, and winning attitude of its players.
Without question, the Club's goal and expectation is to win
at every level of play, whether Freshman, Junior Varsity, or
Varsity, but the true strength of this program is that winning
is always judged by more than the score on the board.
Qualified Coaches
The
foundation of Gateway's success is the absolute commitment of
the coaching staff and board of directors to the best interests
of all players. Mr. Gregg Whitfield leads the coaching staff as Varsity Head
Coach. Gregg, a USA Hockey certified Master Coach leads a coaching
staff comprised of Level
3 (Intermediate) through Level 5 (Master) coaches totalling over 100 years of combined
hockey experience. Gateway has committed to providing the best
coaching for its student-athletes, and to maintaining an environment
alowing consistent instruction and focus for players to grow
and learn from one level to the next.
Scholastic Achievement
Gateway's
student athletes are expected to perform in the classroom. The
Club maintains a strictly enforced policy regarding grade point
average, AND daily attendance. Students
below a 2.0 GPA at the end of a grading period are suspended
from league play until the next grading period's marks are announced,
and players missing class on a game day are ineligible to play
that evening.
Athletic Excellence
In
a contact sport such as ice hockey, overall physical fitness
is the #1 factor in minimizing the risk of injury. Gateway
Hockey recognizes the significance of this fact by beginning
an intensive conditioning program well before the start of the
season, and sustaining it as a priority until the end of the
last game. This means players are expected to attend dry-land
and on-ice conditioning sessions in July as as much as any practice
or game in March.
Competitive
Teams
Gateway
fields teams at the Freshman, Junior Varsity, and Varsity levels.
Players range from 6th-12th grade, with 9th grade and above
eligible to play Varsity (based on ability). Players at Freshman
and JV levels will have the opportunity throughout the season
to practice, and play additional games, at the next higher level
based on their ability as well as their commitment to excellence
in all aspects of the Gateway Hockey program.
Lowest Costs
Gateway
maintains the lowest cost to players of any of the other area
High School programs. There are also several fundraisers each
year, as well as a corporate sponsorship program to help defray
costs. Equipment is not provided. Players fees, and a typical
payment schedule are as follows:
